Our Methodology

In preparing content for the Sentencing Hub, the Sentencing Academy commissioned research from leading scholars in the field. Our collaborating authors were asked to examine all peer-reviewed research published in English over a specified period, usually the past 10 years. These reports were then reviewed by SA staff and external academics.

In addition to these reports, the Sentencing Academy has drawn on Ministry of Justice (MoJ) datasets and publications to create easily digestible offence data snapshots and sentencing infographics.

All content on the Sentencing Hub will be updated periodically to reflect the latest developments, ensuring that the information presented remains aligned with the latest official statistics, thereby providing an evolving evidence base for sentencing. Offence snapshots will be updated bi-annually and Research & Policy Papers every three years. In determining the contents, the SA will consult with practitioners, sentencers, and other stakeholders to ensure that the Hub meets user needs and expectations.
